your life is your life
don’t let it be clubbed into dank submission.
be on the watch.
there are ways out.
there is a light somewhere.
it may not be much light but
it beats the darkness.
be on the watch.
the gods will offer you chances.
know them.
take them.
you can’t beat death but
you can beat death in life, sometimes.
and the more often you learn to do it,
the more light there will be.
your life is your life.
know it while you have it.
you are marvelous
the gods wait to delight
in you.
I believe in all that has never yet been spoken.
I want to free what waits within me
so that which no one has dared to wish for
may for once spring clear
with out my contriving.
If this is arrogant, God, forgive me,
but this is what I need to say.
May what I do flow from me like a river,
no forcing and no holding back,
the way it is with children.
Then in these swelling and ebbing currents,
these deepening tides moving out, returning,
I will sing you as no one ever has,
streaming through widening channels
into the open sea.
As within, so without: How our inner world creates our external experience.
Cleaning, Re-organizing, Yoga, Meditation, and Cleansing = Radiant Happy Me!
No thats not me in the picture above, but I decided to use this image because it perfectly captures how I feel! Let me tell you why…
April was a month of major cleansing for me. I have done some serious detoxifying on many levels of my being. Out with the old and in with the new! My conclusion from the experience is this:
Through yoga, meditation, and a healthy, environmentally friendly lifestyle, we can operate and feel more vibrant and alive while making the world a better place!!!
We are living in an exciting time! We are in the middle of a battle over whether we shall continue to force the majority of the planet to pay for the unsustainable lifestyle and diet of the privileged few. It is also not far fetched to say mankind is reaching a boiling point in human history. Will we continue the way we are going and destroy ourselves? Or will we graduate into planetary adulthood & awakened consciousness? Which side are you on?
When we stand back from privileging our personalized perspectives, and localized world views, narratives, ideologies or cultural lens, the horizon of the global perspective, the global lens opens. This is a key stage in becoming a critical thinker. We all depend on a healthy planet. Without it, we can’t survive, let alone be healthy ourselves.
Interestingly, living and eating in healthy ways (on a plant-based whole-foods diet) is also one of the key ways we can contribute to environmental health. In the end, our healthy planet will depend on developing intelligent cooperation among the nations and people of the world. And it all begins with YOU. The individual. This is where the idea of cleansing comes in, not only for personal benefit but for the benefit of all.
For me it all began one day in March when me, my boy friend, and a few peeps were sitting in a cafe after yoga. We were joking about the guilty pleasures of eating fluffy sticky sweet pastries after yoga when my lovely friend Kyla mentioned doing a month long cleanse starting in April. She even had cute flyers! My curiosity was piqued.
Kyla Dawn Crouthamel (pictured here at the Illinois Yoga Asana Championships where she won 2nd place for women) is a rock star Bikram Yoga Teacher who also practices Anusara Yoga with me in Kk Ledford’s class at the Yoga Tree in Hayes Valley. Apparently Kyla was recruiting folks to participate in a Spring Cleanse through Life Force International which would involve taking supplements and increasing food consciousness. I was on board! The most exciting thing to me about this was the opportunity to finally make those much needed changes in my diet. I had been trying on my own for ages, but often lost sight of my intention. The support of Kyla and her team would prove to be crucial to my success in this cleanse. In addition to regular supportive emails containing great cleansing food recipes, we were also offered group support/coaching calls every Sunday. My boyfriend and best friend decided to do the cleanse as well, so I felt quite a lot of camaraderie.
This cleanse was different than anything I had done before because I was in no way required to stop eating. I still ate three meals a day, I just took the colon cleanse supplements twice a day, and gave up the following poisons…
* No dairy, no gluten, no chicken, no red meat, and no processed sugar (only from honey and fruit sugar ok)
* I also majorly reduced my coffee intake from daily to just once or twice a week, and even then I only had a small black cup of coffee (no sugar and milk).
* I drank virtually no alcohol all month. Just an occasional glass of wine, but certainly no liquor or beer (which is wheat based).
I thought it would be really hard to stick to my diet, but the group support I felt was deeply encouraging. With the energy of spring time, I also felt a natural call in my body toward detoxification.
Old cravings for unhealthy food quickly fell away. I was no longer tempted by the siren’s call of cream filled chocolate pastries. Instead, I began to crave good clean simple foods. Like quinoa, legumes, apples, bananas and Kale in particular. Very quickly I started to feel clean, clear, light, energetic, and happy! My regular yoga and meditation practice deepened and opened profoundly. I have also lost about 8 pounds with out really doing anything but changing what I eat. But most noticeably, and to my great relief, all my chronic physical ailments went away!
Now let me explain to you HOW amazing that really is… As long as I can remember, and particularly over the past couple years I have suffered from stomach aches and chronic allergies, sinusitis, frequent colds, and other flu-like feelings. Frustrated and tired, I thought it was just symptomatic of living in a city and being sensitive. ALL of that has gone away with this cleanse!!!
While I knew milk and meat were bad for me, and tried to keep in-take of those foods to a minimum, I had never considered cutting out gluten… and boy am I glad I did! I know there is a lot of controversy about gluten, and whether it is really good or bad, etc. I also don’t want to tell anybody what to do or how to eat. But I do encourage everyone to LISTEN TO THEIR BODY! My body is much happier, healthier, and works better than I ever knew it could now. Do I miss bagels? Sure. But if I have to choose between bread and optimal health for me and the planet, I’ll take the latter thank you very much.
The clarity that this cleanse brought to my mind, body, and spirit allowed me to see my life more clearly, and so external shifts naturally began to happen as well. I have known for a while now that I needed my own space and should move into my own apartment (as nice as my room mates are, living with a group of people is no longer working for me). I was worried because the housing market in San Francisco is extremely competitive! But I set my intention on the Eve of the New Moon (which also happened to be Beltane) and literally the next day I found the perfect place, in the perfect location, for the perfect price. I zoomed to prepare my application, and somehow out of the 50 some people who applied for the apartment at that open house, the land lord picked me! I mean WOW. Its amazing how when you are clear and aligned with nature, the universe naturally rises up to support you.
Moving to a new apartment is a great opportunity to do some more traditional spring cleaning and get rid of a lot my old material possessions. As I have started to sort through my things, I have realized that I am going to be throwing out over %90 of it! And boy does that feel good 🙂
I know who I am, and I know what I want to do with my life on this planet. I feel passionate and enthusiastic about my work as a teacher and student of Yoga. I am entirely dedicated to the upliftment of consciousness and joyful living in all beings! In honor of my own fantastic Spring Cleanse experience, I am doing a Spring Into Summer Yoga Workshop at Yoga Garden SF. Maybe some of you Bay Area folks can join me!
I am so infinitely grateful for my experience with this cleanse. I feel incredibly powerful and clear. I feel more energized, inspired, compassionate, and patient then ever before as well. I highly encourage everyone to do the same and take responsibility for yourself and for your role as a member of the human race.
Here are some other good ideas to put into practice:
* Support organic local farming. Eat a vegetarian/vegan diet of real, unprocessed foods. Spend your food dollar on locally-grown foods, rather than imports from distant lands. Best strategy: grow as much of your own food as you can.
* Be a healthy animal. Use your body as much as you can to get around. Walk or bike to work and to do errands. Take the stairs, not the elevator. Look for ways to use and strengthen your body. Lose the fat. Don’t support the medical/insurance industries with your money: Get healthy so you rarely need their help.
* Educate yourself. Prepare yourself for a more challenging future — We are beginning to transition away from our reliance on fossil fuels. Learn to see clearly who is your friend and who is your oppressor. Don’t take this distressing world situation out on yourself by self-indulgence, depression, or surrender.
* Break your addiction to the unhealthy foods that wreck our health and harm our planet.

In the 10 years that I have been practicing Yoga, and the 4 years that I have been teaching, no experience has been as profoundly life-changing as my discovery of Anusara Yoga in 2008.
It was a sunny summer day in beautiful Jackson Hole, Wyoming, that I walked into my first Anusara class at Akasha Yoga Studio. My first Anusara Teacher, Neesha Zollinger, spoke a lot about opening to grace, about “lining up with the flow”, and about intrinsic goodness. We opened the class by singing the traditional Anusara Invocation, and once we began to move, we did so with precision, sensitivity, and highly refined alignment. At first, the unfamiliar alignment cues felt strange, but very quickly I felt myself plug into a form of yoga that felt more natural and joyful then any other.
Anusara yoga is one of the fastest-growing styles because it is an artistic, celebratory, and empowering practice. It is based on a life-affirming vision with an overall positive view of life. Anusara uses the Universal Principles of Alignment (an elegant set of very precise guidelines on physical alignment) which can be applied to both the asana practice and to living one’s daily life off the mat. In Tantric philosophy, we see that the body is the outer form of energetic embodiment. Therefore, the Universal Principles of Alignment are looking at the body from a perspective of Universal Consciousness, as opposed to just the biomechanical principles of the physical body.
The state of our physical body is in many ways just the surface manifestation of our consciousness. In Anusara yoga we not only line up our bodies, but more importantly, we align our attitude, our hearts and minds, with the great universal energy that pulses inside every single thing that manifests in our known reality. This universal energy, or Supreme consciousness, is life itself. Eternal and absolute, it is at the very core of our true nature as living beings. When we remember who we truly are, life unfolds before us in a seemingly magical way. Synchronisity and “good luck” surround us, and we walk our path with great enthusiasm.
During my first few classes of Anusara Yoga in Jackson, I very quickly began to recognize profound changes in my body and my life. I was hooked! I immediately signed up for the first part of the Anusara immersion that summer. While I knew I had found something amazing, I really had no idea how deep the rabbit hole would go…
Although I was already quite flexibile and strong before coming to this particular practice, certain advanced poses still seemed impossible. Anusara yoga greatly surprised me when I quickly gained the ability to do hand stands. Later on in my Anusara career (once I found my primary Teacher, Kk Ledford, in San Francisco) a wide range of previously impossible hand balances, binds, and inversions became accessible. Among these are visvamitrasana, koundiniyasana 1, Koundiniyasana 2, pinchamayurasana, and yogi dandasana, and that’s really only just a few! I also healed many of my old injuries and cured chronic pain in the shoulders, back, and knees. I know I owe much of my transformation and personal asana syllabus expansion to my teacher Kk’s continual stressing of the importance of alignment with particular emphasis on shoulder loop! *One of the seven energy loops within the body. “This loop originates in the upper palate and flows backward to the base of the skull and down the back of the body to the bottom of the shoulder blades. When you engage Shoulder Loop, the head moves back slightly and the shoulder blades move down the back. At the bottom of the shoulder blades, the loop begins arcing forward and upward as it draws the bottom tips of the shoulder blades in and upward, toward the heart. The loop continues forward and up to the palate again as it lifts the chest and opens the throat.” -JF
Needless to say, Anusara Yoga is now the only form of Yoga I practice. When I am teaching yoga, Anusara alignment principles and philosophy completely inform the class. But it will be a long time before I can officially call myself an “Anusara Certified” teacher. Even the first level of Anusara teaching called “Anusara Inspired” requires a great deal of practice, study, and training before one can even just apply to hold this title. The lengthy Anusara teacher certification process has drawn some criticism. In a recent Q + A, John Friend offers the following explaination.
Yes, our certification process is widely recognized as one of the most rigorous licensee processes within the yoga world. The criticism is that it takes much longer than the average certification process within the yoga world today. It is more extensive than most, and has a very high standard. Therefore, it is not as easy as most certification programs. Although it can be a challenging process, our certification represents a very high standard of knowledge and teaching skill within an ever-expanding yoga world today.
It is set this way to assure that all students of all levels are given an outstanding and uplifting, expansive experience at every level of being, and so that the vision maintains integrity with expansion. Understanding that the standard of certification is of the highest rigor in the world, we also offer another licensing category for those who are in process of certification and are fully dedicated to the practice, the teachings, and the community. The Anusara-Inspired level of licensing is empowering and encouraging as teachers move towards full certification. Thus, the process is supportive and not exclusionary.
For this reason, I highly respect Anusara Yoga Teachers, who stand out in a world of Western Yoga that regularly pumps out tons of unprepared “teachers” who have only been practicing for a couple years themselves, and have only completed one of the many fairly simple generic trainings available. A great teacher I know once described this epidemic as “learn it today, teach it tomorrow”. I can admit that several years ago, when I completed my first Yoga Teacher Training at Kripalu, I may have been getting ahead of myself. Don’t get me wrong! Kripalu is a fantastic institution which I greatly love and respect. The experience of deeper study I had there was wonderful, BUT I’m just not sure my peers and I were really ready to call ourselves teachers afterwards. That is why the great idea of the ”Immersion” exists in Anusara. It is a 3 part series of deeper study of Anusara Yoga, and it is a prerequisite of doing the Anusara Teacher Training.
In conclusion, I must confess that the incredible amount of blessings and opportunities that Anusara Yoga has brought into my life, is by far more valuable than any physical experience or benefit. The philosophical vision of Anusara yoga is rooted in Shiva-Shakti Tantra, which is the first spiritual path that has ever made sense to me. My interest and devotion to this lineage has lead me to engage in deeper study of Kashmir Shaivism and meditation with world renowned teacher Paul Muller Ortega. Along the way, I have met some amazing people and gained some valuable connections. But most importantly, I have gained a sense of intrinsic self-worth. When you love and trust yourself, you recognize the same shining light of consciousness in the eyes of every other human being, and you see the world as a boundless playground of opportunity and delight.
I am infinitely grateful and so very blessed to walk this path. My only desire is to serve and share this gift with others.
Om Namah Shivaya! Jai!

There is a river flowing now very fast. It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid. They will try to hold on to the shore. They will feel they are being torn apart and will suffer greatly. Know the river has its destination. The elders say we must let go of the shore, push off into the middle of the river, keep our eyes open, and our heads above the water. And I say, see who is in there with you and celebrate.
At this time in history, we are to take nothing personally. Least of all, ourselves. For the moment that we do, our spiritual growth and journey comes to a halt.
The time of the lone wolf is over. Gather yourselves! Banish the word struggle from your attitude and your vocabulary. All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration.
We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.
You are also mad, quite mad,
To imagine you are not God.
Goddam it, aren’t you a Spirit,
And your ministers a flaming fire?
Womb Nostalgia – Visual & Performance Art Event
Market Street Gallery is pleased to present Womb Nostalgia, a visual art & performance art exhibition, featuring works by a selected group of talented artists opening March 4, 2011, and running through March 31, 2011. The opening reception is on Saturday, March 5th, 2011 from 7PM-10PM at 1554 Market Street, San Francisco, CA.
There is an inherent desire to return to the womb. The womb is a place of healing, safety and connection to another body. The womb encapsulates us in unconscious wholeness, in the blissful state of a plant firmly rooted in the warm earth. Since the moment the connection was severed and we were brought out into the cold and light, we have strived in so many ways to return to that original place of warm, watery security. From the scared child who hides in his closet to be enclosed by its dark walls, to the lovers who fold themselves together at night, exchanging fluids and seeking instances of wholeness, to the single sleeper curled in the fetal position, we are all seeking ways to recreate that original experience of the womb. It is the underlying desire of our lives.
Womb Nostalgia features works of art that recreate the experience of that original place. Featuring painting, photography, drawing, video, sculpture and installation art by
Rachelle Reichert, Rachel Znerold, Reneé Wilson, Kathryn Virginia Harmon, Sonya Genel, Monique Atherton, Kelly Jean Egan, + Audrey V. Haller
Join us on opening night for music, performance, and poetry by
